“Russian” into Boxes


Everyone has probably seen pictures of the famous St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.  This box project is inspired by photos of that famous landmark.  Richard Raffan popularized this box shape and this tutorial creates a stylized version of that familiar form.




  • Dry stable hardwood about 2 ½+” square and 4 ½” long
  • Sandpaper
  • Finish of choice



  • Center finder, awl
  • Spindle roughing gouge
  • Fingernail ground spindle or detail gouge
  • Square and round nosed scrapers
  • Hook nose scraper, Hunter swan neck or Sorby multi-tool
  • Parting tools (ultra thin is useful for maintaining grain alignment)
  • 3/8” beading parting tool
  • Skew chisels
  • Calipers, internal and external
  • Depth gauge, measuring rule
