First spiral- Winner TOTW 9-10-2017

Haven't been here in a long time, I only allow myself time for one forum and I'm heavily involved in another, my apologies.... But I wanted to post this and give a big thanks to Hughie Mackay for his excellent tutorial he posted here on spiral carving. It provided all the information I needed to get...

Re: Just missed a great opportunity.

A gentleman just came in my shop to program his alarm remote, he saw I do woodworking so we got to talking. He just awarded a contract to build 140 display cabinets for the gem & mineral show. He said If he had known I did this type of work he would have had me do the job, he loved our work. I ...

Re: Back injuries.

Another bad back here... I would guess that if you had an MRI it would reveal a bulging, or herniated disc, putting pressure on your spine. I started having some bad bouts with my back in the 90's as the result of some hard tumbles and hard miles from military service. Finally in 2000 my back went o...

That's Fantastic! Love the idea. I have a couple of shallow bowls from very nice wood, that warped pretty badly after final turning. Now I know what I'm going to do with them :)

Re: African Sumac Burl HF

Thanks again everyone! An acquaintance from work wanted a gift for his wife who is an art collector. He came over a couple of days ago and bought it, it was the last piece I have turned so I was still in love with it... sigh.... but there will be others :)

Re: Is it Hot in Here?

If anything turned from wood can be called "high art" this certainly can! It is absolutely original! Because you came up with it as an experiment makes no difference IMO. If I knew anything about multi-axis turning, I would steal the idea and be off and running with this concept. I will be...

Re: African Sumac Burl HF

Thanks for the comments all! I totally hear what your saying about The lid following the curve of the form. I elevated it a bit because I felt that the lid component would be hardly visible sunken deep within the upper flair, at least from a side view. Probably could have benefited from better plann...

African Sumac Burl HF

I got this wood locally in an arborist yard (dump). African Sumac is pretty common around here, but I'd never seen burl. This wood was dry, and it is very hard, so it was challenging. Wanted to show-off the natural edge, so settled on this design. The accents are ebony. It is about 7" wide and ...

Those are great! A friend of mine is very into those, in fact, that's all she turns. She says it is a very popular hobby among certain circles, and she sells them briskly at craft shows. I believe she gets her inserts from Craft Supply.

I think that is about the most appealing texturing I have ever seen! Detailed to be sure, but not busy, a very calm and soothing pattern. And of course the form is first rate, and a clever top piece. First rate sir!
