Re: New Chainsaw design

I can see the problem; he has the bar on upside down! They'll bend like that every time. And I am a proud owner of a BIG Stihl too. But I'll need to think about THAT modification.

Re: Murmuration- Winner TOTW 2-18-2018

Mike, You have gone where most of us can only dream of going. Totally fantastic piece. I've tried my hand at carving and wound up with a lot of band aides in place. Your work is museum quality, in my humble opinion. It has an M. C. Eischer quality to it, and that's not meant to blow your head out of...

Re: More Bad Pizza- Winner TOTW 2-10-2018

Chuck, You're wife is to be commended. I DO know a lot about the style of glasswork she's doing, and she's doing a great job. Slumping is the basic part of kiln work. Easy, but has enough to it that if you forget to do something, you won't like what you find in the morning. Anyway, my speciality was...

Re: More Bad Pizza- Winner TOTW 2-10-2018

Chuck, I'd be interested in what your wife is doing on glass. I've been a glass crafter/caster for about 40 years. Not much about glass crafting I haven't tried and gotten good enough at to earn a living at it. Is she going to try fusing? Or is this just painting? Anyway, glad I inspired her. I just...

Re: Flower Follow Up

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the C&C. I need as much guidance on this stuff as I can get. Still a rookie. The paints are readily available on Amazon. Watch Tim's video and write down the name of the paints and the thinner. Do a google search and you'll find them quick enough. I've come to trust Amazon,...

Re: More Bad Pizza- Winner TOTW 2-10-2018

Have to admit; I didn't know what "TOTW" was. And now that the honor has been bestowed on me, I don't know what to say. Most times I feel like an inept rookie at turning. I do get some stuff to come out pretty good but I really have to work at it. These paintings are a pain in the Butt to get ready ...

Flower Follow Up

Now that I've been nominated for TOTW and am famous, I'm almost ashamed to post this one. But, it's here. Just finished. I tried a different kind of wood and it clearly had an effect on the finish, but I like it anyway. I introduced Gold based on something I saw on the Olympic Opening. They mixed co...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Jim, Glad you're learning. Never too old! Tim refers to another guy in Scotland that he, Tim, says does exceptional work. I looked him up and he does a different style, so he's worth watching if for no other reason. I'm not impressed by his paint work, but it's one more process to know about. I came...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Jim, I can't use an air brush! Tim and I both cheat with it. We put a pea sized drop of the paint directly onto the black surface and use the air brush to move it around. You'd NEVER get the kinds of designs he and I get using it in the traditional way, but you'd probably get something pretty regard...

Re: Tübatulabal Cooking Basket

Bill, That bottom carving is incredible. Thank you for sharing how you did it. I've made a lot of basket illusions and never would have considered adding a decorated foot. Guess I'm too dumb to think of such things. I do a true Herringbone rim on some of my baskets and now that you've inspired me, I...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Mike, Yes they are. There's an excellent You Tube video by Tim Yoder. Go to You Tube and search for "Cosmic Cloud." His will come up and you'll have the most entertaining half hour of wood turning you've ever seen. He's great as a turner, an artist and fun to listen to. In his process, he leaves not...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Mike, Leaving the center open like that is only one option. I could have painted it black and put a flower in there. I could have gilded it with gold. Or I could have left it flat and put some other curious thing in the center. And that's the problem; too many options. This one was an exercise, or p...

More Bad Pizza- Winner TOTW 2-10-2018

Actually, it came out better than it had any right to. I'm learning about how to smooth and seal end grain. If you don't, the black paint will get sucked into it and leave a disgusting surface. Hard to believe, but that's what happened. Took a lot of sanding and sealing to beat it but I got there. H...

Re: New Basket Topic

I watched a Harvey Meyer, two part, video online and decided this was something I wanted to get into. He made it clear that it takes time, and that's an understatement. Now, if I understand your process, you turn a bowl green, let it dry, probably do some refinement, put on the beads and radial line...

Re: 3-Legged Bowl

Wish I'd been awake during the 70s. I was young, stupid and in the Navy. Traveled all over the world during my twenty years, and visited some places I'd give my left arm to go back to. Alas, hindsight is wonderful, and that's where I put your three legged bowl. It's a lovely piece of craftsmanship. ...

Re: In for a loooooong learning curve!

Curt. Welcome to the slippery slope of Basket Illusions. I watched Harvey's You Tube video several times, found some places where he did things I didn't like but learned a tremendous amount from him. That video belongs in everyone's collection. He's got a technique that works well for him, and that'...

Re: Tampering with Segments

Jim, Yes, there is some design on the base. I've figured out the Sorby Spiral cutter and did it with that. Lousy picture and I will get it photographed better. Getting the segments dead on accurate is the key. Some crafters advocate "Half Ring Correction." And that goes against my grain. If I plan t...

Tampering with Segments

Working on the Segment process and put this relatively simple one together to work out some of the process. Things like to slip around during glue up so it's an area I need to pay more attention to. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it.

Re: Sing!

One definition of "Art" is that it is EVOCATIVE. For me, that means when I look at something, if it evokes feeling, thoughts, ideas and the like, then, I'm looking at a piece of Art. And that piece Evokes thoughts not fit to print. It's a lovely piece, however, and I have to admire your technical sk...

Re: Too Many Mushrooms

Okay, folks. I appreciate the comments. Personal aesthetics aside, I'm not overjoyed with the way I laid out the colors either. They Work. But the next one will be different. There's no reason the entire surface has to be covered. I've got two pieces of Rough Turned Ash that are all but dried and re...

Re: Paper Joint

Okay, as promised, here's the picture of the Vortex bowl under construction. It's a little difficult to see the pattern developing between the bar clamps but if you blow the picture up, you can see it. Disregard the top piece of trash wood. That's just something to give the bar clamps a surface to h...

Re: Paper Joint

I used brown paper simply because there was a piece of it lying close by. I can see where newspaper would work too. Anyway, the joint held. All I was doing was putting a tenon on the Purple Heart. Once I had it turned, I popped the joint and used the tenon for the rest of the project, so there wasn'...

Paper Joint

Ran into a problem making a base for a Vortex bowl. Too complicated and embarrassing to go into the details, but I'm trying a Paper Joint today. I'm using Purple Heart, yeah, I know, glutton for punishment. And have glued it to a waste block with a piece of brown paper between the two pieces. The th...

Re: Advice

I had the same problem with an AAW smooth smock. The zipper caught and could NOT be cleared. I returned it, told them I paid too much money for something to fail like that and they sent me a new one. The problem is the large "flap" that goes behind the zipper. You have to keep an eye on it when you ...
