Re: Swirly maple burl

What a darned nice piece of timber and a good clean simple shape to make the most of it.....darned good photos, too! All-in-all, a bit of a winner, I'd say! Les Thanks, Les! Interesting figure and chatoyance in that piece of burl. My experience with maple burls (especially sugar maple) is that the ...

Re: Shot in the Dark

Very cool Mike. I would have also really tried to keep those pellets as part of the final turning. Helps tell a story. Thanks, Mike. Yeah, there were more, but only one was in the position to stay at the final thickness...and I would have liked to have kept more of them, too. I can just see some ki...

Well, Jim...that's beautiful wood with a beautiful shape. And I like how you signed between the streaks, and not in the center.

Curt, if this were anything other than a basket illusion, the flat spots would drive me nuts. But since it is emulation something other than wood, I 'get it'.

I don't think anyone here took your comments or title as disrespectful, Curt. Someone might be a little...uptight. They might need a hug and a participation trophy while we're at it...

Re: Big [really big] Beautiful Grizzly Beast

Funny, Roger...I was actually just looking that lathe over last night. From what I saw, it looks like the 24" version (the one you got) is the exact same as the 20" version except a taller (maybe stockier...I don't know...but they look alike) and with a 3hp motor instead of a 2hp. The shipping weigh...

Re: 2018...so far

Are you ready for some show and tell and sell? I believe you are. Very nice selection. Another "wishing you well with the sales". I'm also looking forward to seeing the persimmon bowl. I've turned a lot of persimmon and it's one of my favorites, but around here it's unusual to find a persimmon tree...

Re: 2018...so far

Mike, each one of your pieces takes the time of many of mine. I simply don't have the time into each turning that you do. Not that I don't already highly respect your talents, but if you produced 24 of YOUR types of turnings in about a month, I think my head would explode!

Swirly maple burl

As most of us know, not all burls are full of eyes. Not sure if that makes them galls or what...never figured that one out. Basically, when it is a big growth on the side of a tree, I call it a burl. So, here you have it, a maple burl measuring 12.5" wide x 5.5" tall. The plan (as of the roughout st...

Shot in the Dark

Now, I make it a habit to NOT name my pieces. Though, from time to time, it just happens. This is a pith in walnut crotch (with multiple branches/crotches) measuring 9" tall x 12 1/2" wide. The name, Shot in the Dark hit be because I kept uncovering pellets! Well, I'm guessing from a shotgun, as the...

Re: 2018...so far

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the sentiments and 'good luck vibes'. :D Jim, yes, persimmon was used for the heads of 'woods' back in the day. I don't think it was used so much because it was so hard as much as for its qualities. Just like ash isn't the hardest wood, but it is used for baseball bats...

2018...so far

Well, my first shows are upon me. One this weekend, then one the following. I'm particularly excited about the one next weekend. It is the ACC (American Crafts Council) show in Baltimore. Hefty booth fee, but hoping it is equally rewarding. I do have some bowls left over from last year (15 of them),...

Re: Elm Bowl?

Jim, as I said on FB, as I am a BIG fan of yours, the ogee doesn't work for me on this one. The foot is the right width, and the transition from the bottom to the foot is sweet. But the proportions of the ogee and flat spots (or points) in the curve distract my eye. You've done some super sweet ogee...

Re: 3-Legged Bowl #3

Tricksie, you are, Les! This was anything but 'easy' to pull off...though it may have been easy for you. As easy as it initially appears, most customers won't understand the intricacies of pulling this off. Well done. And I like that the shape of the bowl 'matches' the shape of the legs...round.

EEK! Go do a snow dance! So...I have to ask... Have you no snow or no precip? I mean, has it been raining, but not cold enough for it to snow? Here, though we've had some of our coldest temps ever, and longest periods of said cold, whenever it has precipitated, it has been above freezing. In the pas...

Re: B&R Bowl

Jim, nothing compliments beautiful wood better than great shape and finish. Those two elements let the wood speak for itself...but we see so much more without realizing it. You are a bowl master! As for coring AM...it all depends on the piece. I have a set now that is a three core set. The smallest ...

Les, again, I think your proportions are spot on. Likewise, I like the shape of the bowl for this style (3 legged bowl) turning. It fits that retro feel. Another winner!
