Re: Shot in the Dark

I see faces! :D I like the shape and the walnut sure has a lot of character. This one sure has a shine to it, that adds to the difficulty of photographing it. Perhaps in person it would be different, but just from the picture I don't find the bright color of the void fill as attractive in this case....

Re: Swirly maple burl

Don't know how I missed both of your posts, but I did. I like the inward slanting lip and it's a awesome burl even if it doesn't have eyes. It reminds me of the large burl I got, that we discussed, except yours didn't fall apart. I'm curious if you had to (or did) wrap the exterior with...

Re: Pewa Practice

Good luck on your limiting your tool buying habit :) , I think we all have that problem. Good job on the pewa, done a few myself and believe they add to a piece. Is the sapwood on the bottom of the bowl? Yea, I know we are all one tool away from greatness. Yes there is a bit of sapwood on the...

Re: Splits and cracks, but not a leg in sight!

Les, I like this shape and it’s a good thing that you didn’t put three legs on this one.
For me having the bit of bark in it really adds to its attractiveness.

Re: An other basket

Curt, I think the bit of distortion from turning this green adds to the basket illusion. What is more impressive is how quickly you have advanced this process. A few years ago I tried to turn some Willow, it was so stringy and I got so much tear out that I moved on and didn’t finish it. So I’m amaze...

Pewa Practice

Hello my name is Jim and I have a tool buying habit. There are times I get tools that I plan to use and then they sit waiting to be used. The other day a friend was looking at a roughed out bowl with a bowtie drawn on a crack and asked about it. I explained the Hawaiian tradition of putting pewas to...

Re: 2018...so far

Wow! That is quite a selection and even more impressive that you made them all (and more) this year. I hope they all sell quickly for you! I'm curious about the Persimmon bowl, I thought that wood is extremely hard as it was commonly used for golf clubs. Isn't that why they were called woods? Was it...

Re: Flower Follow Up

This one is attractive too Jerry! I think that I like the flowers better than the bad pizza. Not that I know what I talking about, but I think it would look better if the black space was a bit more random in the colored section. With some color going closer to the gold band in more places. Still loo...

Re: Elm Bowl?

Thanks for the comments! Looks like a consensus on this being Elm. I think it would be "safer" to have left the base off, but as is it nice to experiment a bit too. Curt, I actually did think of Bob Stocksdale when working on the base. I put a bit of a concave on it to put my take on it. It is quite...

Elm Bowl?

I think this is an Elm bowl, but I’m not sure. If anyone knows better please let me know. Looks like it might have been in the woodpile for a while as there is a bit of spalting going on. It is about 11” x 5”, finished with Danish oil and Beall buffed. When I roughed it I left the base long and plan...

Re: 3-Legged Bowl #3

Definitely a fan of this style Les. I like the colors of this one, the Padauk makes a good contrasting wood with the Sycamore. I think the ball style gives it a retro look too. Also, as always for you it is very well done and I'm sure it will sell quickly. If I were visiting your shop I'd buy the lo...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Jerry,

Thanks for the detailed explanation! After my first reply I did watch Tim's video and that is a cool method. It was cool, I watched it on Youtube my TV. Over the weekend a friend told me about being able to do that on a smart TV. So I learned a couple of things. :D

B&R Bowl

There have been a lot of incredible turnings posted lately and I enjoy seeing all of them. The only incredible part of this bowl was provided by Mother Nature. Just a round and brown bowl, but I think it cleaned up well. :D I think it is a core from a bigger piece of Ambrosia Maple. It doesn’t have ...

Re: Black Walnut Jar

I like the beading on dark wood too. I think in your learning process you have made a unique version of the basket illusion. As others have said, you are really going to like the D-way beading tools, I know I do. Interesting though the diamond or tear drop tool is the one I've used the most, but the...

Re: Tübatulabal Cooking Basket

This is an awesome basket illusion Bill! I really appreciate the history of the origin of this style of basket. It is also quite generous of you to have donated this to your club's Christmas auction and I'm a bit envious of the person with the winning bid! :)
