Re: Amphora Verde

Congratulations Bob, a piece worthy of acceptance, I'm sure. I'm guessing that the handles and leaves are carved from the solid, in which case you've done an amazing job of keeping the line of the form flowing.

Re: In for a loooooong learning curve!

I'd be more than happy with that as a first attempt. At first I thought that the individual cells in the pattern were too large, but then I re-read the text and saw that this is just an 8" disc so I guess they're about right. Was the blank laminated from a few different pieces, accounting for some n...

I'm sure that they'll enjoy the demo, Chuck, even Bacchus himself would be happy to drink grape juice from that.

Re: Ambrose Maple NE Bowl- Winner TOTW 1-7-2018

Hi Jim....firstly, congratulations....and secondly, it came as no surprise because this is a stand-out piece. In a line-up of a hundred bowls there would be many that we wouldn't give a second glance to, but this one is going to grab attention wherever it is seen.

Re: Turned aged cedar beer can holder.

Hello Larry, and welcome. You've opened a big old can of worms and there's no simple answer. Very often we think that a piece of wood is dry, just because it's been stored under cover for years. However, there's no such thing as "dry" timber, as it always has a moisture content and any timber stored...

Re: Spirit of Snowdonia

Way to go Mike.....the rule of thirds became the rule of fifths, circles became vertical strips became squares and the dangdest thing is that it all makes sense. I just tired to explain it to my wife, who is seriously dyspraxic, but it didn't make sense to her. She doesn't do maths ( or even math), ...

...it's common-or-garden sycamore, Jim. It grows like a weed around here! Acer Pseudoplatanus, which I believe that you refer to as Sycamore-maple in the USA.

Re: Spirit of Snowdonia

Thanks everyone, for the kind comments. ...Its a good example of the "rule" of thirds. Not a hard and fast rule, but one that will rarely steer you wrong... ...I struggle with this rule when I'm making large platters. In this example, the outer rim is much the same width as the dished area, with a s...

Spirit of Snowdonia

This is the latest in a series of pyro-engraved platters that I've made, decorated with Celtic images of mythical and pseudo-factual creatures. This has a symmetrical pattern comprising eagles and dragons; the eagle being the bird from which Snowdon takes its original Welsh name of "Eryr" and the d...
