Re: Murmuration- Winner TOTW 2-18-2018

Well I have been absent from here for a bit and totally missed this until now. Thanks so much for the TOTW honors Bob. I think this is evolving into a new direction that really seems to strike home for me. I love the challenge of the carving of these. They do take a ton of time, but it is a process ...

I saw this over on WOW. Like it here as much as I did there. Awesome work Curt. I think the basket illusion thing is sucking you in.

I'd say that pattern is a bit hypnotic, but like Steve, I like it. Well done.

Re: Pewa Practice

Nice bowl and nice pewa Jim. So you didn't really state it, but did you get some kind of tool to do that Pewa? I have done a couple before I knew anything about the Hawaiians doing these and did them totally by cutting a pewa and making it fit into a carved recess in the bowl. Took forever. If you h...

Murmuration- Winner TOTW 2-18-2018

My latest attempt at depicting birds in turning. Starlings are not much loved anywhere, but the bird is actually striking and the huge flocks that fly together are hypnotic (murmurations). I tried to capture some of that movement in this piece. I really like the carving aspect of these, but still ne...

Very cool Mike. I would have also really tried to keep those pellets as part of the final turning. Helps tell a story.

Re: Swirly maple burl

Interesting figure and chatoyance in that piece of burl. My experience with maple burls (especially sugar maple) is that the burls all have some sort of unique interest. Not sure what maple this is, but love those little flecks.

Re: Tübatulabal Cooking Basket

This is awesome work Bill. It was hard to pick between this piece and Jim's for the TOTW, but the form on Jim's piece is what made my decision. Nothing wrong with your form on this though, and your detail work is really outstanding. I think you have become another master of this type of work. I know...

Very nice Curt. Unlike others, I like the dark. Nice work on one of your classic forms. I think you are being sucked into the basket illusion vortex.

Re: New Basket Topic

It is my turn to pick the TOTW and it was interesting that there were several basket illusions that were worthy. Hard to pick one from amongst them. I just loved the shape of the bowl/basket of this piece of Jim's. It really has the look and feel of a basket, about as good as an illusion gets. Like ...

Re: More Bad Pizza

Very nice Jerry. I think I agree about the bare wood on this one. Those paints are pretty awesome. You didn't say but are those the sonja? paints that other folks have been using? Electric colors that look fun to play with.

I was invited into a show later this year in Richmond WA titled New Horizons. The intent of the show is to show images of the work the artist is known for, but allow them to explore something quite different that interests them. My other passion in life right now is birding and bird photography, so ...

Re: New Basket Topic

Well this piece is awesome as we have come to expect Jim. Don't think I'd classify it as silly, but perhaps requires a bit of OCD to complete one of these. I have never tried one, and probably never will. I respect those who do and the wonderful results of the time and effort invested. You are truly...

Wonderful work Bob. Looks great on the WOW cover. Colors are really nice and you have perfected that texture. The leaf arms were the stroke of genius that really makes this sing though. Congrats on getting into the show.

Re: I haven't given up..... yet.

I'd say you are heading in the right direction. I've never given this a go, but saw David Nittman demo nit numerous times before he passed away. I have great respect for anyone that tries it and even more for someone like you Curt, who is determined to learn by the school of hard knocks. That is gen...

A Geometer's Treasure box

I have not been posting much lately mostly because I have been working on pieces that take a ton of time and I have been waiting on PR and jury selections before showing them. I have another in the wings I'm waiting a bit before unveiling and I have another in the works that I hope to have done with...

Re: Sing!

Wolfgang, I love the story of the making of this piece as much as the piece itself. That slight recurve near the opening really was a nice touch that made the form. These flatter forms are most definitely not easy to hollow and I'm not sure I'd try for a consistent wall thickness either. That the ca...

Re: Recovered Ruins 30

Ronald, as all others I am impressed with your ability to keep these together. Looking at the photo before I read your description I was pretty sure it was cherry burl, but it is even neater than that being Choke Cherry Burl, and a burl of large scale at that. Great photos as well. My choice for TOT...

Re: Twisted- Winner TOTW 11-19-2017

Thanks all for the comments and thanks to Alan for picking this piece for the honor. I really had no Freudian slip regarding the ear reference. Totally did not enter my mind as I was just trying to capture the math form. Reference to twisted ears seems almost a instant response to this piece though....

Twisted- Winner TOTW 11-19-2017

I recently stumbled on a new class of minimal surfaces based on warping a torus. These forms are called Bianchi-Pinkall Flat Tori, named after the mathematicians who described them. The end result is very similar to other work I have done based on knots and tori. As with many of these forms, this pi...
